Here you can find some inspiration, whether you want to be able to more easily find and access items in your home, reduce the number of belongings you have, or change your approach to the consumption of goods altogether.

All sorts of people, movements and principles have inspired me in my journey to become more organised, less consumer driven and to lead a simpler life. I’ve taken inspiration from the movement for sustainability, the principles of minimalism and everything from Marie Kondo to Hoarders!

Here I’ve provided a few helpful resources that you may like to give a go.

Minimalism

I’ve seen minimalism described as intentional living, essentialism, or a lifestyle of less. Whatever you call it, there are benefits to be had whether you just want to dip your toes in, or immerse yourself in the ethos fully.

ShipShape Home can help you in your journey to trying minimalism

In 2016 I discovered the work of The Minimalists, who are authors, podcasters, filmmakers, and public speakers on the subject of minimalism. They detail their compelling personal journeys in adopting and practicing the principles of minimalism and have a unique way of helping you get to the essence of what really matters in life.

For a teaser of their work, check out their TEDx talk. If you’re keen for more, watch their documentary Minimalism: A Documentary About the Important Things. Their book, Minimalism: Live A Meaningful Life is an easy introduction to minimalism and I think anyone who reads it will feel motivated & compelled to make a change in their life.

ShipShape Home can help you on your journey to giving minimalism a go. I’ve done it and can help you do the same!

Tips for living a simpler, less consumer driven life

There are a few things you can try to slow down your consumption of goods
  • Carefully consider each item before buying - use the When considering making a purchase list below

  • For items that aren’t on your must-get list - tell yourself “next time” and check at home that it’s a valid purchase

  • Remove much of the temptation to buy things you don’t need - make sure no junk mail comes into your home and unsubscribe from all promotional emails

  • Don’t shop as a pastime or pick-me-up - instead treat yourself to something experiential

  • Regularly look at your spending - for what wasn’t 100% essential, where have you had to cut back on because of that spending?

  • Try aiming for stuff equilibrium, where you use the one in, one out rule

When considering making a purchase, first ask

Before buying something, stop and have a think
  • Do I absolutely need to have this?

  • What purpose does this serve?

  • Will this add value to my life? What value will this add to my life?

  • Where will this live & do I have the room for it?

  • Am I willing to replace an item with it?

  • Can I see myself owning this for years to come?

  • If you’re still not sure, take a photo of the item - live with that for a week and see at the end of the week if the initial appeal has faded.
